An easy 3 hour .drive to Discovery Park Karratha. A nice big park with, wait for it, GRASSY sites. When we arrived we were given a bottle of bubbly and a small box of chocolates for being loyal Discovery Park customers. They have a pool, the amenities are old but clean. Sunset was beautiful but we're not on the beach to see it go down. Went to Hearson Cove to watch their staircase to the moon but as soon as it showed its face it disappeared behind a cloud. Drove to Hearson Cove next day to see what it was like in the daylight. Totally unexpected - absolutely stunning with beautiful blue water and white shelly sand. Found our first Sturt Desert Pea - they are just so pretty. Had a swim then headed to Murujuga National Park part of the Burrup Peninsula to check out the Aboriginal rock art. You really had to look to find them. Next stop Dampier where we saw Red Dog and onto another amazing waterfront. It has a huge playpark for the kids and beautifully manicured gardens. Had a drink at the Hampton Harbour Boat and sailing club. Checked out the William Dampier lookout where there were more Sturt desert peas. We went back to Hearson Cove to have a second go at staircase to the moon and it was heaps better than last night. Got pulled over by the cops on the way home. They said Al wasn't speeding but went through the roundabout too quickly, didn't stay in his lane and they couldn't read the number plate because of the dust. Al also got breathalysed but they were really nice and suggested some lookouts for our travels the next day. Drove to Roebourne to check out the old gaol but it was closed - still had a good look around though. Saw the old building - the church, post office and police station. Went to Mt. Welcome lookout where they had metal figures of Aboriginals looking out over their land. Then onto Cossack. Checked out the schoolhouse first which had a brick missing in the wall and inside were four baby kite chicks - just adorable. Next the Tien Tsin lookout and down to Cossack wharf to check out the old courthouse, old Galbraith store and telegraph office. Bought a pouch for Ambers necklace. Had lunch at Point Samson tavern on the water - shared a fishermans basket - batter was light and crispy on the fish, prawns and calamari. Walked down to the old jetty and checked out Honeymoon Cove. Looked though the binoculars out to Jarman Island and the historic lighthouse. Drove through Wickham and the port Walcott yacht club. On the way back checked out the Cape Lambert facility where they process the iron ore. Park had a really good lady singing and put on wine, nibblies & sweets. Cheeses, dips, meats, olives, crackers, lollies, biscuits, donuts, muffins and strawberries - they really look after their patrons here. Did our Archipelago Adventures tour. Got on the catamaran at Hampton boat and sailing club. Quite a windy day. Cruised along the archipelago and had morning tea which was a large selection of cakes. Stopped at Rosemary Island where we anchored and swam to shore. Water was beautiful but a pity it was so windy. Lunch was slow cooked brisket, pork, chicken, curry, jasmine rice, salads and bread rolls. Slow cruise back to Manus Island and a complimentary Cornetto icecream. Went past the iron ore wharfs - 5 ships a day loaded with 250,000 tonnes of iron ore with an export value of 35 million dollars each. Blew a gale on the way back. AGI at Karratha is the best supermarket we have ever seen - they really cater for the miners and fly in fly outs. Roast meats, salads, packaged meals prepared in store and a massive selection of perfectly packaged meats and other items you don't normally find in a supermarket - could spend a fortune in here.
