Five and a half hour drive to Kalbarri with a fuel and coffee stop at Billabong Roadhouse. Bumped into John & Karen who we had met at Carnarvon. The park is new and large and all the sites have an ensuite which was hard to leave behind. They also have a nice pool and the park is still under construction so it will be really nice when it is finished. No awning out again because of wind. A cyclone passed through Kalbarri in May and they are still waiting for repairs - lots of houses and businesses with tarps and boarded windows. Went to the Skywalk in Kalbarri National Park, a cantilevered viewing platform that hangs mid air 100 metres above the gorge. Over 1000 tonnes of sandstone were excavated during construction then reused to make the tiered landscape. Made of 117 tonnes of weathering steel and able to support 1000kg/square metre. Amazing views. Then on to Natures Window, a rock formation perfectly framing the river and landscape. Next stop the Z bend lookout. The gorge plunges 150m down to the river gums and sandstone and Murchison River. Got some great drone shots. Next on to do list was the Pink Lake and WOW what a spectacular sight. The pinkest of pink lakes the pink due to the presence of carotenoid producing algae, Dunaliella salina, a source of beta carotene. The company BASF has a system within the lagoon which sustainably harvests the beta carotene for food, beverages, health supplements and baby formula. It is a source of vitamin A and a natural food colouring agent. Next the convict ruins established in 1853 as a convict depot providing labour for mining and agriculture in the area. Still standing is part of the gaol with tiny cells, magistrate quarters and hiring depot where the convicts slept in the most uncomfortable looking hammocks. Captain Sanford Homestead is just beautiful and under renovation have view of both the ocean and the Pink Lake. Lucky Bay was absolutely beautiful but too windy today. The Natural Bridge to Island Rock walk with stunning coastline along the boardwalk. Shellhouse Grandhouse - more views - more wind. Eagle Gorge - stunning views and decided to walk down the rocks to the beach. Picked up some unusual shells and the rock formation down here were just out of this world. Last stop today Pot Alley - blowing an absolute gale - could hardly stand up straight. I swear it is impossible to grow a vertical tree in WA. Next day checked out Mushroom Rock and Red Bluff. Stunning coastline such a shame about the weather. Checked out Jakes Bay supposed to be a great surf bay but wind was blowing waves onto the rocks. Had wanted to snorkel at Blue Holes but the wind just about knocked you over. Still got some good drone shots. Back at the van a couple of roos hopped passed. Walked along beach to Jakes Point picking up shells - have to stop - an will be overloaded.
