Almost a 7 hour drive - first part was all winding roads up a mountain - not much good for fuel economy. The last part was mainly a single lane road. Stopped at Ravenshoe for coffee and met a lovely couple who gave us helpful information on our upcoming journey. Arrived Goldfields caravan park for our 3 night stay - cash only. Lovely couple run the park. Amenities clean and modern. Happy hour from 5 - 6 around the campfire. Great to exchange info on our travels. Big ginger cat called Garfield has adopted the park - very friendly and loves a scratch. Set off for Cobbold Gorge - 1 1/2 hour drive - gravel and dirt roads with cows grazing everywhere. The termite mounds look like a cemetery - hundreds of the things. Had lunch at the gorge - I had Thai beef salad but they forgot to put on the dressing which made it very ordinary. Cobbold Gorge is on private property and we were taken by bus to start our walk. The guide tells you about the flora and fauna then onto the electric powered boat to check out the gorge. Some parts are only 2 metres wide with 30 metre walls on either side. We got to walk over the 17 metre high glass bridge which wasn't too scary - had to wear paper boots so as not to scratch the glass. Alan hoofed it on the way back home and it only took 1 hour. Heaps of cows on the road and I even saw a camel. Undara Lava Tubes were next on our list. Up at 5.30 and got to Undara about 7.40. As it doesn't get light here til almost 7 was concerned about roos on the road but all was good. Tour bus took us to the tubes. Lots of interesting facts - the tubes are over 160 metres long being the longest in the world. Saw some wallaroos. Spectacular rock formations from the lava flow. Went to Kalkani crater and walked up to the rim. Al got some great shots of the crater with the drone. The on to Copperfield Gorge at Einesleigh which is the remnants of an ancient lava flow from a now extinct volcano thousands of years ago. The basalt columns are just amazing looking like tessellated rocks. Walked down to the beach over the barbed wire fence into the gorge itself. Definitely worth a visit. Had to drop into the Einesleigh Pun for a cold one before we headed home. On the roads we had to stop for cows, 2 roos and an echidna and ran over a dead snake.
